Watched a crew in Tacoma pour a driveway last week and they were still using a magnesium float on the first pass. That's a rookie move that guarantees you'll fight bleed water all day.

Read an article from a concrete supplier that said using a magnesium float too early traps the bleed water under the surface. It forces you to keep working it back out, which can really mess up the finish. They recommended a wood float or even just a darby for that first pass to let the water escape. Makes sense if you think about it.

Honestly that article sounds way too careful. I've used a mag float for the first pass for years and never had a problem. You just need a light touch and to read the slab. If you're trapping water you're pushing down way too hard way too early. A wood float can actually tear up the surface if the concrete is still super wet. Tbh a lot of those supplier tips are for total beginners who don't know how to feel the mix yet.

Maybe it's just me but the weather that day changes everything.
