My uncle's 5-minute weather prediction beat a $400 radar app

Last month in Tulsa, my uncle stood on his porch, sniffed the air, and said a storm would hit our street in 20 minutes. I laughed and showed him my radar app saying clear skies for at least an hour. Sure enough, 18 minutes later, hail the size of golf balls pelted my car while I was parked at QuikTrip. He's been doing this since 1987 and claims it's about the smell of wet dirt and birds going quiet. That app has since gone through 3 updates and still can't predict a drizzle right. So, anyone else trust a relative's weird folk method over actual tech?.
