That $200 'survival seed bank' I bought from a guy at a gun show was a total scam

I dropped $200 on a so-called 'survival seed bank' from some vendor at a gun show in Lexington back in March. He claimed the seeds would grow in any soil and last 25 years in the sealed pouch. Turns out half the packets were just plain grass seed mixed with a few radish seeds, and the rest were already moldy by June. Has anyone else fallen for those prepper booths that promise way more than they deliver?

Take a closer look at the date on the packets. Most of those "25 year" seed banks are just repackaged garden center seeds from last season, so the germination rate drops fast. If you ever try buying seeds again, stick with well known companies like Baker Creek or Johnny's and skip the gun show resellers entirely.

I helped a neighbor dig up a "perennial wildflower meadow" kit he bought at a county fair last year, turns out it was mostly chicory and Queen Anne's lace, just common weeds that grow on roadsides. It's the same pattern you see with those cheap "fire starter" kits that are just sawdust and paraffin wax, or the $50 "tactical" flashlights that die after two rainy nights. The gun show and fair circuit is full of guys who know the survival crowd is desperate for peace of mind and will pay a premium for anything that looks official. You're better off buying a few packs of real seeds from a local hardware store for five bucks and learning to save your own.

Man @phoenix_grant34 is right, I had a buddy who bought a "survival" fishing kit full of rusty hooks wrapped in newspaper.
