Warning: My buddy told me to double check my torque specs on a simple bracket install... ignored him and snapped a bolt in half

Last weekend I was putting up a heavy shelf bracket in my garage, nothing fancy. My friend Mark who builds decks for a living said hey you should torque that down gradual like. I was like nah it's just drywall anchors I got this. Snapped the bolt head clean off at the second turn. Now the hole is stripped and I have to patch it. Has anyone else had a pro friend give you obvious advice that you blew off and regretted instantly?
