Got stuck on a hill at the Chesterfield job site and now I chain up way earlier
Hauled my mini excavator out to a site off Route 9 in Chesterfield back in April and hit a muddy grade after 20 minutes of rain. The trailer started sliding sideways with the machine on it and I ended up blocking the road for 40 minutes waiting on a tow. Now I chain up the second the forecast even hints at a shower, and I keep two extra chains in the truck box. Anybody else got a spot where the grade always catches loaded trailers?
Route 9 near the Chesterfield line has a grade just before the bridge that got me last fall. I was pulling a 14 foot dump trailer loaded with gravel and the truck started slipping around the 3/4 mark, so I backed down the whole thing in the rain. That spot has a little crown in the road where the water runs across and turns the top layer to soup. Since then the chains go on that hill anytime the sky even looks dark, and I added 200 pounds of sandbags over the rear axle. It adds ten minutes to the trip but it beats sliding backwards with a load on.
