Got waved off a low bridge on Route 9 near Poughkeepsie and it changed my whole route plan
Last Tuesday I was hauling my mini excavator north when a guy in a pickup flagged me down right before a low overpass. He said the clearance sign was wrong by about 4 inches and a dump truck smacked the bridge there the week before. I had to back a trailer into a gravel lot and turn around, cost me almost an hour and a half. Now I call the county ahead of time for bridge heights on any road I haven't run with a load. Has anyone found a good way to double check clearance numbers besides the signs themselves?
Calling the county every time seems like a lot of work when you could just buy a height stick and check the low ones yourself. The signs are only as good as whoever last repaved the road under them, and a fresh layer of asphalt can eat a couple inches without anyone touching the sign. I get why the dump truck story spooked you, but a guy in a pickup flagging you down is not much better than the sign itself, since you have no way to know if he had his numbers right. Backing into a gravel lot cost you an hour and a half but at least your machine didn't end up peeled open on the bridge. A stick and a tape measure in the cab will beat any phone call once you are sitting in front of the bridge.
