Picked the tagged flatbed over my buddy's step deck for a mini ex run to Denton, and I've been second guessing it since Thursday
So I had to move a 12,000 pound mini excavator from my yard up to a job in Denton, about 55 miles each way, and I was standing in the driveway at 6am with two trailers hooked to nothing yet. My buddy offered his step deck and I almost took it, but I went with my 22 foot tagged flatbed instead because I know how it tracks and I didn't want to learn a new trailer on a Thursday morning with rain coming. Loading went fine, chain and binder setup took me maybe 25 minutes, but about 8 miles in on the highway that thing started walking all over the place in the ruts and I white knuckled it the whole way. Turns out I was a little light on tongue weight because I centered the machine instead of nudging it forward a foot, and moving it up fixed it on the way home. My buddy still swears the step deck would've rode flatter and honestly he might be right about the ride quality. So here's my question for you folks, when you're hauling something in that 10 to 14k range, do you go with the trailer you know or the one that's technically better for the load? And how far forward do you usually set a mini ex on a flatbed to get the weight right?
