Can we talk about how I ignored laser layout tools for years?
I always figured a tape measure and a chalk line were good enough for setting out foundations. Then I got stuck on a complicated commercial site in Austin with weird angles and a tight deadline. After 4 hours of re-checking my marks, I borrowed a PLS green laser from a buddy. It cut my layout time down to about 45 minutes and I had zero errors. Now I'm honestly kicking myself for not trying one sooner. Has anyone else had a tool they thought was overkill that saved their butt on a big job?

Old timers love their water levels until the battery dies on a laser and suddenly that ancient tech doesn't look so bad.

My buddy Marcus on a foundation crew outside Phoenix had one of those automatic rotary lasers for years and barely used it. He was digging footings for a weird octagonal house with no right angles and spent almost a full day leveling everything by hand with a water level. He finally busted out that laser and had the whole perimeter marked and level in under an hour. He told me he felt like an idiot for letting it sit in his truck for two seasons.

That reminds me of something I read about those old water levels... apparently they're still the go-to for a lot of old-timers because they never break and don't need batteries. But that story about the octagonal house really drives home how sometimes you just need the right tool for the weird jobs. Marcus probably figured the laser was for fancy new construction, not realizing it would save him hours on something with zero straight lines.
