The site foreman who caught a welding defect with a $10 mirror
Last month at a commercial job in Phoenix, an old foreman I barely knew leaned over and showed me a crack in a beam weld using just a dental mirror he keeps in his vest pocket. He said 'your fancy scanner missed this by six inches' and walked off without another word. How do you get junior guys to actually check the little stuff instead of just trusting the tech?

That line "your fancy scanner missed this by six inches" is brutal but probably the best teaching moment ever. Did the foreman ever explain to you WHY the scanner missed it, or was it just one of those "you figure it out" lessons? Like was the crack in a shadow or weird angle that threw the sensor off?

Man, that's rough. It's one thing when tech fails but another when you have to hear about it that way.
