Watching a rookie try our old Trimble total station last month made me feel ancient
Three years ago I was running a crew on a site in Phoenix and we were still using paper blueprints and string lines for layout. Last month this kid fresh out of trade school spent 20 minutes trying to figure out why the robotic total station wasn't tracking him. Turns out he had the prism pole facing the wrong way. I pulled out my old leica from 2018 and showed him how we used to do it with a data collector and a lot of cussing. Has anyone else run into young guys who can't fall back on the basics when the fancy stuff glitches?

Why don't schools teach them to actually look at the instrument before hitting the button?

@paulmitchell nailed it. Had a similar kid on my crew last year, sat him down with a manual and a non-robot total station for a week until he learned to read the angles the hard way.
