A client's throwaway comment changed my whole approach to color matching

Last Tuesday a regular, Maria, said my toner made her roots look too ashy, not like her natural warmth. She wasn't upset, just mentioned it while checking her phone. It hit me because I've been using the same formula for 5 years and never questioned it under salon lights. I pulled up her old photos and realized she was right, my default was skewing cool. Has anyone else had a client casually point out something that made you redo your whole process?

Man, that hits hard. I've been there too, and it stings because you realize you got comfortable. For years I had a go to gloss for brunettes and one day a client said it looked "muddy" and I was like wait, what? I pulled up her first visit photos and sure enough, the tone was off. That one comment made me start keeping a little notebook on each client's base warmth. It's scary how easy it is to get locked into a habit and stop seeing what's right in front of you. Good on Maria for speaking up, even casually. That's a keeper client.
