A stylist in Dallas fixed my bridal updo disaster with one bobby pin
Two years ago I was doing a bridal party in Dallas and the maid of honor sat down with hair so fine my updo fell apart twice before the ceremony. A stylist from the next chair over, Renee, came by and showed me how to cross-pin instead of just pushing pins straight in, and it held all night. I still use that trick at my own chair in Fort Worth on almost every formal style now. She said pinning flat fights the hair, but pinning at an angle locks it down. Anyone else got a pinning or sectioning trick that a stranger taught them at a gig?
Pinning flat fights the hair" is such a good way to put it, and it took me years to really get that. When you push a pin straight in, it just sits there like a tiny shelf and the weight of the style pulls right past it. Angled or crossed pins act more like a little clamp that grabs the section and the base together. So when you cross-pin, are you going X shape over one section, or are you doing two pins that meet in the middle from opposite sides? And how tight are you pulling before you pin, because I always wonder if the hold comes more from the angle or from how much tension you load in first.
