Almost set my curtains on fire with a curling iron.
Left my iron too close to the fabric while doing a home client. Now I always use a heat-proof mat.

Holy crap, doing that for a client is next level stress. @jamie_carter87 is right, that adds a whole different kind of panic. I would have completely lost it. The heat proof mat isn't just a good idea, it's a total must have now. That story actually made me sweat a little.

My old salon in Tempe had a rule after a stylist singed a towel. We kept a small fire extinguisher right at every styling station, not just in the back. It sounds over the top, but when you're responsible for someone else's safety in your space, you plan for the worst. That client panic is so real you start seeing fire hazards everywhere. We even had a quick evacuation plan posted by the door.

Man that's way too close for comfort, doing it for a client adds a whole other layer of panic. Glad you found a solution with the heat mat before anything worse happened.
