Foam rollers vs velcro on a blowout: foam won by a mile and I feel silly for not knowing sooner
I did a full blowout on a client with thick, wavy hair two weeks ago and set it on velcro rollers while it cooled, which I've done for years. By the time she got to her car in the parking lot the crown had already gone flat and she came back the next morning asking what happened. Last Thursday I tried the same head of hair with 2 inch foam rollers, let them sit 15 minutes while I cleaned my station, and the volume held through her whole workday, she texted me a photo at 6pm and the lift was still there. Here's what I think made the difference: velcro grabs and pulls the hair tight against the core, so the curve comes out small and tight, but foam gives a soft, round set that doesn't crush the cuticle. Foam is also way easier to remove, no snagging at the ends, and I can brush through the section right after. The one catch is foam doesn't grip fine, limp hair as well, so I still keep the velcro around for that. I'm in Orlando where it's 90 percent humidity half the year, and the foam set held anyway. What do you all use for holding a round brush blowout on medium texture hair that likes to collapse?
