Had a client ask for a 'sunset on a stormy sea' color melt last week

She came in with a Pinterest board full of moody orange and gray pictures, which was already a fun challenge. I mixed a custom coral, a deep slate, and a bright tangerine, thinking I could blend them into something cool. Halfway through the foil work, she looks in the mirror and goes, 'Hmm, it's giving more 'traffic cone in a fog bank' than I wanted.' I almost dropped my brush laughing. We ended up adding a streak of metallic gold between the colors to break it up, and she loved it. It turned out great, but I'll never forget that line. Has anyone else had a client describe your work in a way that made you crack up?

That's a great point from @smith.anna, but pictures can be tricky to match exactly.

Bad taste in pictures" is a bit harsh, but I get the point. Sometimes the client's idea just doesn't translate directly to hair, and that's not anyone's fault. I had someone ask for "dried lavender" and what she showed me was basically dusty gray. We did a test strand first, which saved a lot of trouble. It lets you both see the real color before you commit to the whole head.

Wasn't that just her bad taste in pictures, not your skill?
