Question about why some clients lie about hair history

Honestly I had a lady come in last Tuesday swearing she never used box dye, but when I did a strand test the color lifted completely uneven. Tbh I would rather deal with honesty upfront than spend 45 minutes fixing a mess they could have warned me about. How do you guys get new clients to actually tell you what they've been using?

Oh wow, maybe they're not lying on purpose, they just genuinely don't know what they used because they bought it at a drugstore five months ago and threw the box away. I always ask what the packaging looked like instead if they can remember, sometimes that jogs their memory better than asking straight up.

Tbh @janarivera you're totally right. I've had customers get flustered trying to name a brand, but the second I ask about the bottle color or if it had a pump, they're like "oh yeah it was that blue one!" It's wild how our brains work with visual clues versus names. I've started doing the same thing when my friends ask what I used on my hair months ago.

@janarivera right on the money here. People aren't trying to be difficult, they just genuinely blank on names (happens to me all the time with TV shows, too). Asking about packaging is such a smart way to get around that brain freeze. I've noticed if you ask "was it in a tube or a jar?" suddenly they remember every detail of that plastic bottle they tossed. It's like our brains store visual stuff way better than product names, especially for something bought on a whim at Target. Really appreciate you pointing that out, seriously solid advice for anyone dealing with customers or just chatting with friends about their routine.
