Talking to my aunt made me rethink foiling techniques

My aunt has been doing hair for 35 years and she told me last week that she still uses the paper wrap method from the 90s. She said she never switched to the plastic because her clients always came back with cleaner lines. It made me wonder if I've been overcomplicating things with all these new tools. Anyone else ever go back to an old technique and get better results?

My aunt actually taught me the same paper wrap method when I started doing hair. Tbh I thought she was old school but I tried it on a few clients and the foil lines came out way cleaner than with my usual plastic strips. Honestly sometimes simpler really is better even if it feels outdated.

And honestly the paper traps less heat too which means less risk of frying fine hair. I switched over last year and clients have actually commented on how their highlights look softer. It's one of those old tricks that just works better, no point fighting it.

Feel you on this one. I mean, my grandma used to wrap her highlights in paper towels back in the 80s and her hair always looked amazing. It's honestly kind of wild how we keep reinventing the wheel when the old school stuff just works. Glad to hear it's working out for you and your clients, that softer finish thing is real. Sometimes you just gotta trust the people who've been doing this longer than we've been alive.
