Took me 8 years to figure out I was sectioning wrong

I was at a class in Dallas last month and the instructor watched me part out a client's hair. She just said 'you're fighting the growth pattern, not following it' and showed me one simple trick. Now my layers fall way smoother and I feel dumb for not catching it sooner. Has anyone else had a basic technique click way later than it should have?

Saw a YouTube hairstylist break down the same thing a few months back. She talked about how most people section off from the crown straight down but really you gotta follow the natural curve of the head. Totally changed how I do my own layers at home. Good on you for finally getting that lightbulb moment though better late than never.

Follow the natural curve? Sounds like a great way to end up with choppy, uneven ends.

Actually if you watch how your hair dries naturally, it shows you exactly where to angle those scissors. Following that curve keeps everything blending instead of giving you those random chunks.
