Unpopular opinion: balayage is overrated for fine hair like mine

I tried balayage three times at different salons over 2 years (one in Portland, one in a small town near me) and every single time my fine hair looked stringy and faded within 10 days. Switched to a full foil with a soft root shadow last month at my regular girl Sarah's place and it actually held up for 6 weeks with way more volume. Am I the only one who thinks balayage just doesn't work for certain hair textures? What's your go-to technique for fine strands?

$475 for that last balayage at that trendy Portland place and my hair looked like I'd just thrown some highlights in a blender... Sarah's full foil with root shadow only cost $320 and actually grew out decent. What was the salon charging you for the balayage that didn't work?

Read that balayage works best on coarse or thick hair, not fine strands.
