Went to a big city salon expo, left doubting the whole industry's advice

I drove down to Atlanta last month for the Southeast Beauty Show and sat through three classes on balayage and textured cuts. Every educator pushed the same expensive tools and product lines, but the demos all looked the same, same brush, same sectioning pattern, same finish. Then I talked to an older stylist from a small town outside Macon who said she does half her color corrections with a $12 drugstore developer and a timer, no fancy brand. Made me wonder if we've overcomplicated this craft to sell more stuff, not to serve clients better. Anyone else feel like the industry pushes gear over skill these days?

$12 drugstore developer? lmao that would get me kicked out of my chair if my boss heard me admitting that out loud. It's crazy how much of this gig is just confidence and knowing when to trust your gut over the price tag.
