Unpopular opinion: the best forts get built on a whim, not planned out
I was standing in line at the hardware store in Boise last Saturday and overheard a mom telling her kid they had to wait until the weekend to build a fort because it needed planning. It got me thinking about how I used to do the same thing, sketch out pillow placement and which chairs to use, and honestly those forts were never as fun. The one my niece and I threw together in about 4 minutes with two kitchen chairs, a fitted sheet, and a clothesline clip turned out cozier than anything I ever mapped out. We didn't even use the good blankets, just an old quilt and a beach towel, and she read in there for almost two hours. Something about the rushed mess of it makes it feel more like a hideout and less like a project. I think the weight of a heavy quilt pulled tight across a chair back does more than any careful setup ever could. Does anyone else build their forts on the fly, or am I just lazy about it?
