Found out my $18 hand grinder beats my $90 electric one, is that normal?
I was reading a thread on a coffee forum last week and someone posted a side by side test showing that a cheap hand grinder gave a more even grind than most sub $100 electric burr grinders. I grabbed an $18 Hario Mini Mill off Amazon to test it against my Cuisinart and honestly the cups from the hand grinder taste way less bitter and muddy to me. Did anyone else make this switch and actually stick with hand grinding long term, or did the arm workout get old after a couple weeks?
Hand grinders win because the burr is actually doing the work instead of spinning fast and smashing beans. Electric makers under a hundred bucks cut every corner on the burr set, that is where your money goes with the good ones. Problem is the arm thing is real. I lasted maybe three months before I started dreading the morning ritual, and for a darker roast it can take a full minute of cranking. Keep it for pour over on weekends and grab a refurb Baratza if you get tired of the workout.
