Overheard someone call pour-over 'just hot water through dirt'
Was at a cafe in Austin last week and this guy behind me told his friend that pour-over is basically a scam, just hot water through dirt. It got me thinking about how we all start somewhere, I used to think the same thing until I tried a properly bloomed Ethiopian natural process. Now I'm wondering if the ritual is half the flavor, or if the gear really matters that much. Anyone else have a moment where a dismissive comment made you reconsider your own coffee habits?
My brother called my Chemex a "glass funnel for people who hate themselves" about 4 years back. Then I made him a cup from some Rwandan beans I'd just got and he went quiet for a minute, then asked where I bought them. The gear helps but I swear the whole ritual of slowing down and paying attention is most of it.
