Roasting my own beans for the first time, that smell hit different

I finally tried home roasting with a simple pan method last weekend after reading about it on a coffee forum. The beans went from green to a nice medium brown in about 12 minutes, but what surprised me was how much chaff flew off, I had to clean my kitchen twice. I used a bag of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe from a local shop in Columbus that cost $11, and the cup honestly tasted fruitier than anything I've bought pre-roasted. Has anyone else tried pan roasting, and did you get that weird smoky smell stuck in your clothes for days?

Man, it's funny how the little things we do ourselves just hit different once we see the whole process.
