Spent 40 minutes trying to figure out why my pour-over tasted like dirt
I got some new beans from a roaster in Portland last week and was so excited to try them. Ground them up, did my usual pour-over routine, and the first cup tasted like someone rinsed mud through it. I checked my water temp, my grind size, my ratio, everything. After 40 minutes of frustration, I realized I forgot to take the plastic cap off the inside of the Aeropress filter basket. Has anyone else done something this dumb with new gear?

Man I've done something SO similar. Bought a new V60 dripper and couldn't figure out why my coffee was taking like 5 minutes to drain. Kept checking my grind and water temp. Turns out I left the little paper tab from the filter stuck to the bottom of the cone. Drove me crazy. For your Aeropress though, check that your seal ring is seated right too. That plastic cap thing got me once as well.

Ugh, that plastic cap in the Aeropress is the sneakiest thing. Right after you get the filter seated right, give the cap a rinse before you screw it on, that little rubbery smell can weird out your first cup too.
