TIL that my cheap scale was why every pour over tasted off
For about a year I used this dollar store kitchen scale that only measured in whole grams. I figured close enough, right? Then a buddy who roasts beans locally watched me make a cup and said 'you are way off on your ratio, that 15g of coffee is really 17 or 18.' I borrowed his scale that reads to tenths of a gram and wow, the difference was huge. My 1:16 ratio was actually more like 1:14 or worse, depending on the bean density. Swapped mine for a $25 pocket scale on Amazon that does 0.1g and now I weigh everything, even the water I bloom with. Has anyone else found that the cheap tools hold you back more than the fancy beans do?
That line about whole grams got me. I had a similar thing with a cheap thermometer for cooking, thought it was fine until I checked it in boiling water and found out it was reading 8 degrees high the whole time.
