A lady at the Tigard library showed me the 2 foot rule for my desk and it worked
I was complaining to her about my study nook feeling cramped even though it is only 4 feet wide, and she said to keep everything I touch daily inside a 2 foot reach and move the rest to a drawer behind me. Did that on a Tuesday and my desk has stayed clear for three weeks now. Curious if anyone else uses a reach limit like that, or do you go by zones instead?
Wait, she had to show you a rule that's basically just "don't keep junk on your desk"? That's like a lifeguard teaching you how to not drown by telling you to breathe. All jokes aside, the reach thing makes sense because it forces you to actually decide what earns a spot within arm's length. I tried zones before and always ended up with a pile in the "later" zone that never got dealt with. The reach limit is better because it is based on what your body does, not what your brain promises it will do later. Three weeks is a solid run too, most desk systems die by day four.
