Bought a cable management tray off Amazon and it peeled off my desk's veneer after 2 weeks

It was in my little home office nook in Lincoln, Nebraska, and I ended up having to sand down the whole spot and use contact paper to cover the damage - has anyone else had their 'cozy' setup backfire like that?

Peeled off my desk's veneer" - oh man, that's rough. It's like everything now is made to look good in photos but falls apart if you actually use it. I've noticed that with so much stuff lately, furniture and gadgets and even clothes, they're all just kinda... not built to last like they used to be.

Wonder if @hart.sage's desk was even solid wood under that veneer or just particle board waiting to crumble.

clairen85 brings up a good point actually. Yeah it's probably particle board under there and once the veneer goes that stuff just turns to dust basically. Ive had the same thing happen with a nightstand from a big box store, looked fine for a year then the edge started peeling and the whole corner just crumbled. Even things that claim to be solid wood now are usually just a thin layer of real wood over MDF. Its sad but its how they keep costs down and profits up i guess.
