Friend swore I needed a $200 monitor arm, but my $30 one from Amazon works fine

My buddy Dave kept telling me that a cheap monitor arm would sag and break within a month. I got a VIVO single arm for 30 bucks off Amazon back in March, and it's still holding my 27-inch Dell just fine. The cable management is simple and it frees up so much desk space. Anyone else had a cheaper option work out better than they expected?

See, I gotta disagree with you a little bit here. I tried that same VIVO arm a couple years ago and the tension screw stripped out on me after maybe four months. The monitor started drooping forward really slow and I didn't even notice until my neck was killing me. I think a lot of it depends on what monitor you're hanging, a heavier gaming screen or an ultrawide is just gonna punish the cheap gas springs way faster than a standard office monitor will. That said, I don't think everyone needs a $200 arm either, I ended up with a $70 one from a brand called Ergotron that's still going strong after three moves and two different monitors. The build quality difference was night and day compared to the VIVO, the aluminum parts just don't flex the same way the plastic ones do. So yeah, your $30 arm might hold up for a while, but if your eyes start feeling weird or you notice the screen drifting down, that's your sign to upgrade before you mess up your posture for good.

Its funny you mention the tension screw, @the_william, because I had a similar issue with a different cheap arm a few years ago. The gas spring just gave up slowly over time and I woke up one morning with my monitor tilted way down. I think a lot of people miss that these budget arms are fine for light use but you really are rolling the dice on the moving parts. A $30 arm is a great way to test if you even like having a monitor arm before you spend real money on one. But once you know you want to keep it long term, that $70 range is where the real value is at. Its not about being fancy, its about not having to re tighten or replace the thing every six months.

Buddy of mine had a VIVO sag in three months and just let it droop till his monitor almost hit the desk.
