My monitor arm gave out and took my mug with it
Just had my cheap gas spring monitor arm fail after 8 months. The thing dropped my 27 inch screen right onto my favorite ceramic mug from a local shop in Portland. Now I'm shopping for a proper heavy duty arm with a 20lb rating minimum. Anyone got recommendations for a clamp style that won't snap after a year?

Ugh, "took my mug with it" honestly hit me in the feels. Ngl, I had the exact same thing happen with a cheap arm from Amazon last year but it took out my favorite chipped coffee mug instead. That feeling of watching it all crash down is just brutal.
I ended up getting an Ergotron LX last month and it's been solid so far. It's rated for up to 25lbs and the clamp feels way more sturdy than my old one even though it cost more. Only had it for a month though so I can't swear it'll last forever.
Tbh though, your mug's sacrifice was noble. Now you have an excuse to find a new favorite from that shop in Portland.

The "noble sacrifice" thing got me. People joke about that but it really does feel like losing a friend when your favorite mug takes the fall. I had a similar crash years ago with a cheap monitor arm and it took out a little ceramic cat my grandma gave me. Still bitter about it honestly. The Ergotron is probably a good call. I use a basic Vivo arm at my station and it's been fine so far but I don't trust it with anything valuable nearby. Your old arm was just waiting for the wrong moment to betray you.

Is it funny how cheap stuff always breaks right when you're attached to something else?
