Overheard a coworker say 'cable management is a personality trait' and now I'm questioning everything

I was grabbing coffee at the break room last Tuesday when someone from accounting said that to their friend, completely serious. It hit me that I've spent maybe 6 hours total just hiding wires under my desk with clips and sleeves, but my actual workspace is still a mess of sticky notes and coffee rings. Does anyone else feel like a great cable setup is just hiding the real chaos?

Does anyone else actually enjoy the process of tidying up cables? I get that it can feel like putting a bandaid on a bigger mess, but I think there's something nice about the order of it. When I take the time to route wires neatly, it clears my head a little, like organizing one small part of my life makes the rest feel more manageable. It's not about hiding chaos for me, it's about creating a small calm spot. The sticky notes and coffee rings are just proof I'm actually working, so I don't mind those either. Maybe it's not denial, just a different way of coping with the daily scramble.

@elliot_patel you've basically called me out by name here because my entire desk setup is just wires doing whatever they want behind a monitor I strategically positioned. I tell myself it looks clean from the front but we all know the back is a tangled nightmare that I refuse to acknowledge exists. It's like putting on a nice shirt to hide the fact that everything underneath is a disaster. Honestly at this point I think my zip ties are just there for emotional support, not actual organization.
