Tried a 5 minute timer to clear my desk and now I can't work without it
Last week I set a 5 minute timer on my phone before starting work and told myself I would only clear the junk off my desk, nothing else. I figured it would take 20 minutes to make a dent, but the timer went off and my desk was basically clean. Here's the weird part. I used to spend like 30 minutes rearranging stuff and still feel like it wasn't right. The timer took the pressure off. It let me toss the receipts and the mail pile and the three pens that don't write without thinking about the perfect setup. Now I do the 5 minute thing every morning at 8:15 before I sit down. The odd result is that I'm way less picky about my setup now. Has anyone else tried a time limit for tidying instead of a full deep clean session?
Get why the timer helps but I'd bet the 5 minutes just fits your mess better than a full reset ever could. Clean desks don't stay clean when the real problem is where the paper goes, not how long you stare at it.
