Spent $30 on fancy vanilla extract and it was kinda worth it

I used to just grab the cheap imitation vanilla at the grocery store for years. Last month I finally bought a bottle of real Mexican vanilla from a little market on Mission Street for $30. It was a lot for one ingredient but wow, the cookies I made actually tasted like something special. I figured I could just use half as much and stretch it out, so it's not as bad as I thought. Does anyone else have a pricier ingredient that turned out to be a good buy for baking?

Oh man, I did the same thing with some fancy Madagascar vanilla beans from a spice shop. Tried to be fancy and put them in my sugar jar, now my coffee tastes like I'm rich or something.

Wait, you actually put whole vanilla beans in your SUGAR jar? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, doesn't the moisture mess everything up? I tried that once and my sugar turned into a weird clumpy mess that tasted like burnt cookies.

@joel_hall17 living the high life now. @stellanelson probably onto something with the moisture thing though. You just got lucky or what?
