That $15 thrift store lamp taught me more about cozy rooms than any design blog
I was killing time at a Goodwill in Boise last Saturday when I spotted this ugly brass lamp with a stained shade for $15. Everybody online says you need layered lighting from three sources and warm bulbs under 2700K, and I used to buy into all that until I actually tried it in my own living room. Here's the thing though, I think the whole "layered lighting" rule is overblown for small rooms. I brought that one lamp home, swapped the shade for a $8 linen one, and my whole couch corner felt different. My sister spent $300 on a fancy floor lamp from some online store and her room still feels cold because she has it in the wrong spot. What actually made the difference was putting the light low and close to where I sit, not having a bunch of them. I'd take one well placed cheap lamp over five expensive ones any day. Has anyone else noticed that placement matters way more than how much you spend on the light itself?
