The lady at the thrift store on 9th talked me out of a lamp and into a better corner
Last Saturday I was digging through the lamp aisle at the Goodwill on 9th, holding this big brass floor lamp that looked cool but had a shade the size of a dinner plate. This older woman in a green jacket watched me for a minute and then asked where the lamp was going. I told her my reading corner, and she shook her head and pointed at the shade. She said, "Honey, that shade will throw one hard circle of light on your book and leave the rest of the room dark. Cozy needs light that spreads." I put it back and she walked me over to a $9 paper lantern shade instead. I paired it with a $4 bulb that has a soft warm glow, and my corner finally feels like a hug instead of a spotlight. She also told me to put a blanket over the back of the chair so the light bounces off it, which sounds silly but it works. Has anyone else gotten room advice from a total stranger while thrifting?
