Book spines facing inward is a cozy crime

I visited a friend's place last month and she had her whole shelf arranged with the pages facing out. She said it looked cleaner and more uniform. I stood there for a solid minute trying to find a single title without pulling every book off the shelf. That's not cozy, that's a guessing game. The whole point of a reading nook is to grab something on a whim, not inspect a wall of anonymous paper. My own shelf has mismatched heights, faded spines, and one book sitting sideways because it doesn't fit. It feels lived in and warm. Am I the only one who thinks visible spines are part of the charm? What's the weirdest shelf choice you've seen that just made no sense to you?

I had a roommate in college who did the whole pages-out thing on our shared shelf and I just started keeping my books in a milk crate under my bed instead. Problem solved. She never noticed and I never had to dig through a wall of paper to find my copy of Dune. Honestly the sideways book thing is real, I've got a fat paperback jammed in that way right now because the shelf is only so tall. A shelf should look like someone actually reads off it, not like a store display nobody's allowed to touch. Weirdest one I've seen is a guy who sorted everything by color, so the series were all split up across three shelves, drove me nuts.
