Can we talk about putting a lamp behind the books instead of on the shelf?

I moved my little reading lamp behind the bookcase last month so it glows through the gaps, and the whole corner went from feeling like a waiting room to actually warm. It throws these soft stripes across the wall and makes the spines look deeper somehow. Has anyone else tried hiding the light source instead of putting it front and center?
