My sister said my shelf looked like a store display, so I swapped one thing and it finally feels lived in
She came over for coffee in November and said it looked like a Target endcap, everything facing out and color matched, and she was right. What fixed it was pulling about 8 books forward so their spines sat at different depths, plus laying 3 flat with a little brass fox on top and tucking a half burned candle next to my reading chair. Turns out the messy look is the cozy look. Do you all leave gaps on purpose or does it bug you when a shelf isn't full?
Gaps bug me so much, sorry. A shelf that isn't full just looks like you're either moving out or you ran out of stuff, and no amount of tilted books fixes that for me. The depth thing I totally get, that actually looks nice and I do it too, but pulling books forward means the back rows get hidden and I forget what I own. A half burned candle next to a chair just seems like a fire waiting to happen honestly. Cozy is one thing but a store display at least looks like someone cared, and I'd take that over random junk on a shelf any day.
