Spent 5 weekends hunting for the right lamp shade, finally gave up and made one

The reading corner in my apartment near the window was perfect except for one thing. The lamp on the little side table threw this harsh glare right onto my book pages. I figured a new shade would fix it in an afternoon. Five weekends later I'd been to three different stores in Portland, ordered two online that didn't fit, and returned one that looked great in photos but turned my whole corner orange. Finally I grabbed some scrap fabric from a friend who does upholstery, wrapped it around the old frame, and pinned it in place. Took me about 45 minutes. Looks handcrafted in a good way. Has anyone else just said screw it and DIYed something that was supposedly an easy fix?
