Vent: my sister in law says knick knacks make a shelf look messy, I couldn't disagree more
She came over last weekend and told me my reading corner in the spare room looked cluttered because of the little ceramic fox and the three rocks my kid painted. I told her a shelf with nothing but straight rows of spines feels like a store display, not a place you want to sit with a mug for an hour. The fox was $2 at a yard sale in Dayton and it stays. Does anyone else keep small stuff on their shelves on purpose, or am I the odd one here?

Why would you strip a shelf down to just books when the whole point is to make it feel lived in? My grandma's shelf had a chipped mug, some seashells, and a photo shoved between the books, and that messy mix is exactly what made it cozy. A tidy row of spines tells you nothing about the person, but a two dollar fox and some painted rocks tell you everything.
