Warning: the library in Ann Arbor moved their reading chairs and it made me rethink my whole nook
I stopped by the library in Ann Arbor two weeks ago and noticed they swapped out their old wingback chairs for low chairs with wide arms and a lamp right behind each one. The light hits the page instead of your eyes, and the low arms mean you can rest a mug without reaching. I tried copying it at home with a $12 clip lamp clamped to my shelf edge, pointed down at a 45 degree angle. My neck stopped hurting after about three nights of reading there. Also put a small side table at elbow height, 22 inches off the floor, and now I never lose my spot reaching for tea. Anyone else steal furniture ideas from their local library?
So when you say the light hits the page and not your eyes, is that mostly from the clip lamp angle or does the wall color behind the chair matter too? Been fighting this exact problem in my apartment for months and I keep blaming the lamp when maybe it's the spot. Also curious how low those Ann Arbor chairs actually sat, like seat height wise, because my current setup has me sinking so far back that the mug idea would never work without a table anyway. Did you measure the chair or just eyeball it when you tried to copy the setup? And does the 45 degree thing still work if your shelf is higher than your head when you're sitting down?
