Choosing between a new rig and a full rebuild on my old Manitowoc

I had to pick between buying a newer 200-ton crawler or putting almost $80,000 into a full rebuild of my 1998 Manitowoc 888. I went with the rebuild, and it took the shop in Tacoma nearly four months to finish. They replaced the swing gear, the main hoist drum, and all the sheaves. Honestly, it runs smoother now than it did ten years ago, and I know every inch of it. Has anyone else gone this route and been happy they kept their old iron instead of taking on a huge new loan?

Yeah, I get that... we rebuilt the main pump and all the hydraulics on our old 2250 last year. It was down for a while, but now it's like a new machine without the new machine price tag. Knowing there's no hidden wear and tear, that's worth more than a shiny paint job to me.

Did the same with my 1995 Link-Belt... knowing the machine inside out beats a new payment any day.

That 1995 Link-Belt is a solid machine. What's the biggest repair you've had to tackle yourself on it, something that would have cost a fortune at a dealer?
