Hot take: Rushing through crane setup costs more time later

I see a lot of crews trying to speed up the initial setup to beat the clock. On a recent site, we had soft ground that needed extra mats, but the foreman wanted to skip it. I pushed back and we spent an hour placing them right. During the lift, the crane stayed level and we had no issues. If we had rushed, we might have sunk or tilted, causing huge delays. That extra hour saved us a full day of fixes. It's a simple lesson in patience that keeps jobs moving smooth.

Skipping mats on soft ground? (I actually gasped reading that part.) That foreman was playing with fire, my friend.

That 'playing with fire' phrase hits different when you've pulled people from ground collapses.

But isn't calling every shortcut 'playing with fire' a bit dramatic? On plenty of sites, crews skip the mats when the ground looks fine, and nothing goes wrong. I've seen jobs finish ahead of schedule because they didn't get bogged down in over-the-top safety stuff. Sure, collapses happen, but so do lightning strikes. Most foremen know their dirt better than any manual. Calling them reckless just ignores how the real work gets done.
