Switched from hand signals to radios on my 90 ton after my spotter sneezed
For 8 years I ran every pick on hand signals and swore radios were for guys who couldn't read a load, then back in April my spotter sneezed at 60 feet up and I swung a truss 3 feet the wrong way. Bought a pair of cheap headsets that week and now I won't boom up without them, the radio is just faster when the guy on the ground has both hands on the tagline. Am I the only one who waited way too long to make the switch?
Kept running hand signals way longer than I should have too, but the sneeze is not what sold me. What sold me was realizing hand signals only work if the operator and spotter both have clear line of sight, and half my picks had a wall or a stack of rebar in the way. Radios fix the eyesight problem, not the attention problem, so you still gotta trust the guy talking in your ear.
