The 17 ton pick that made me ditch old habits

I had this job in Phoenix last month where we had to set a chiller on a roof with tight clearance. My foreman wanted me to rig it the way we always did, with a two tag line setup. I pushed back for a bit, said the old way was fine. He had me watch him set up a different way, using a spreader bar and a single controlled line. That pick went smoother than anything I've done in 12 years. No fighting the swing, no close calls. I've been doing it the old way for so long I never questioned it. Now I'm switching my whole rigging kit over. Has anyone else had a mentor show them a method that made their usual way feel flat out wrong?
