The retired operator at the diner in Gary told me to quit watching my load and watch my boom, and it clicked 6 years in
Sat down at a diner off I-65 in Gary last Tuesday waiting on a delivery and got to talking with an old guy in a beat up Local 150 hat. He asked what I ran and I told him mostly a 60 ton on tilt ups, and he said "you watch the load don't you" like he already knew. I said yeah, that's the whole job isn't it. He shook his head and told me the load tells you where it's been, but the boom tells you where it's going, and I had to sit there a second on that. Been running 6 years and I've caught drift by staring at the pick every single time. Tried it Thursday on a steel set and caught a slight side pull way earlier than I would have watching the hook. Not saying the load doesn't matter, but the boom was telling me about it before the load did. Any of you old hands run it that way or did this guy just get in my head?
