Warning: Almost dropped a 40-ton beam because of a misread tag
I was lifting a steel beam downtown last Wednesday and the load tag said 38,000 lbs on the print. But the actual piece was way heavier, and I only caught it because my buddy Joe flagged the serial number mismatch before I left the ground. Has anyone else had a close call with load tags being wrong on site?

Wait, wouldn't a 38k tag be for a 19 ton beam?

Used to think that math looked off myself honestly. This clears it up pretty well though.

That Patty might be on to something, 38,000 pounds is exactly 19 tons, so the tag itself is already confusing. A lot of guys I know don't double check the math on those tags because they just trust the print. But the real issue here is what happens when the tag is flat out wrong for the actual beam. Did you ever find out if it was a typo from the engineer or if someone swapped tags by accident?
