I've been bringing these 4 paragraph prompts to my writing group at the library in Mesa for 2 months and nobody ever wrote anything from them. Last week Dave, this retired English teacher, told me to strip it down to one sentence with no backstory and see what happens. So I tried a single line about a locked door and a key on the wrong side, and 5 out of 7 people came back with full scenes. Now I'm wondering if short prompts just work better for a group, or if I was overexplaining before. How do you all keep your prompts tight without losing the hook?
