Caught a bizarre fight between two seniors at the library, need prompt advice

They were yelling over a chess move, saying it broke a rule from fifty years back. It sounded like a feud from a novel, but my brain is blank. How do you guys take real fights and make them into writing starters? I write mostly romance, so this is new for me.

Forget the chess move, that's just the surface. They're fighting over something way older. Use that old grudge as backstory for your romance characters, makes the present day tension way richer.

Absolutely. I had my main couple's families feud over a messed up property line from the 1920s. Every current argument about business or trust circles back to that stolen acre. Makes their attraction feel forbidden and huge. That old wrong explains WHY they're so stubborn now. The slow burn payoff is so much better.

In my town, the library feud over a donated book collection from 1965 still affects who talks to whom. It's the same thing, old wounds making modern disagreements feel huge.
