I finally hit 100 prompts in my notebook and #87 was just the word 'gravy'
So I keep a little notebook for writing prompts and last Tuesday I counted and I was at exactly 100 of them. Number 87 was just the word gravy and nothing else, and I still wrote a 2 page story about a diner cook off of it. My friend Dana pulls random ones when she has writer's block, and she got gravy too and wrote a poem about a funeral lunch. The weird part is that the boring one word prompts work way better for me than the long detailed ones I think are clever. Only about 12 of the 100 have ever turned into anything I kept, which feels low but I guess that's normal. Does anyone else number their prompts, and do the dumb ones actually work better for you too?

Used to think the detailed clever prompts were the way to go, like I needed all that setup to get somewhere. Then I wrote three pages off the word "toast" and nothing off a paragraph about a lighthouse keeper's secret, so yeah, the dumb ones win. Gravy is honestly a great one, you can go anywhere with it.
